In car phone call

Travelling back home on the motorway is never a confusing time. The road is fairly straight, everything moves in the same direction, and to be honest is actually quite a fun time as I car share with a colleague.

This means that we end up chatting about all sorts of things and is often like a "warm down" session from the day's work. Phone calls are also shared, and they can be interesting too... a glimpse into the other's personal life.

So one day shortly before my daughter's birthday, my wife calls.

"hello"
"hi"
"you alright?"
"yeah, i've had an idea"
"what's that?"
"have your parents bought their present for <daughter's name> yet?"
"not sure"
"i have a great present idea for them"
"ooh what is it?"
"it's something <daughter's name> is really going to like"
"yes...."
"well, have they bought their present for her yet?"
"i don't know, tell me what your idea is though"
"no, find out first and then then i'll tell you"
"what? this makes no sense. as I'm going to call them, I may as well know your idea so I can suggest it"
"find out first, then call me back"
"what?"
"speak to you in a bit, bye"
"bye"

Confusion! Is it just me or was this just wasting my time? It's like text messages where people ask if you are free tonight. You reply yes, and then they ask whether you want to meet up. You say yes again, asking where. They suggest the pub and you say yes again. Surely it would have been simpler to just ask if I wanted to meet in the pub in the first text?!?

Regardless, I turned to my colleague in the passenger seat and there he was laughing away and slapping his knees in joy.

"so you get it too! my wife's the same..."
